Political/economical thrillers are often too moralizing and conspiracy-related (= cloddish) but I had a feeling that Director Martin Campbell and stars like Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone did not opt for such a movie. And I was not disappointed: the plot has twists and turns, there are chases and crosses/double-crosses, and Gibson and Winstone have high-level performances. Gibson is the main star of the movie, there are few scenes without him, and he is convincing and pleasant to watch.A shortcoming worth mentioning is depiction of officials and big businessmen as corrupted and capable or approving serious crimes – which can not be the case in the event of a democratic country ("black sheep" are always there, but not being at bay). Nevertheless, the movie is worth watching.
This version isn't half as good as the original version. Even though the British version is made for television – Americans would enjoy the British version just as much. It's not as if the British speak another language! This new version is cut, mutilated, castrated and edited and ends as a mere shadow of the original story. If you're entertained by lots of violence – than this is for you. The British version doesn't have violence to keep the audience captivated – it has a good storyline instead. See the original – the ending is completely different and Jedburgh's role makes much more sense. The British Emma (Joanne Whalley) has much more credibility than the Emma in this version. Some films should just be left as they are.
This movie was a huge surprise. I don't ever remember seeing it come through the movie theaters. So glad I found it and watched it via our "On Demand" option at home.I don't see enough Mel Gibson these days. I think he may have been blacklisted in Hollywood but he is still tops in my book.I am not going to spoil the movie for anyone but will say I was REALLY captivated with this one. It grabbed my attention and kept throwing in some neat twists. This is a movie for those of us who enjoy using our mind and understanding the nuance the directors/writers invest for our enjoyment! If you haven't watched this one you need to. 🙂
