Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal Emperor, Akbar and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. Politically, success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar, After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. Through a shrewd blend of tolerance, generosity and force, Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs, the most belligerent Hindus. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa, a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey – the journey of true love. The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar’s biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa – a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa Akbar is their untold love story.

Film Review

This epic is nearly four hours long but doesn't fully justify its length. Both Hrithik and Aishwarya are good in the title roles, but the film's pacing drags. There isn't enough dramatic tension in the simplistic plot so the directer invents a fictional character played (well) by Ila Arun. This results in a long segment that feels lifted out of a Balaji television soap. The music by AR Rehman is good with a few melodious tracks. There's an obligatory villain and a climactic fight scene but it's only moderately exciting. Watch at home on television or DVD.Overall 6/10

I am sure you would be wondering why I am reviewing a movie which was released more than 1 1/2 years ago…truth be told, I was not much inclined to watch this mega-budget, megastar portrayal of the legendary love story of Emperor Akbar & Jodha…the reason behind this is that neither Hrithik Roshan, nor Aishwarya Rai feature on my list of watchable actors…I attribute their success more to their good looks, shrewd career moves and a healthy dose of sheer good luck…I did not have much of a choice when my brother-in-law bought a CD of this movie home & my wife insisted that we should view it as a family…I have been hearing rave reviews till now & so was just a little bit intrigued…however after sitting through the entire movie, I am wondering what the hype was all about…without doubt, this is an above-average film and has been made with a lot of care & effort….however does it deserve all the accolades heaped on it…can I, for once, cry out "The Empe…
