Film Review

This movie was intense! I loved it as it really showed the reality of what happens in the slums of these places. It was full on, kept me hooked, it was brutal, no holds barred and it was a fantastic film that shined a light on what really happens in isolated, war ravaged countries. The structuring of time blew me away, although it may be confusing to some people, it was simply genius to me. The 'true story' effect made it even more engaging to me.My favourite character was Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) This man could have easily been corrupted by the war, the drugs and the people as he lived in that environment. His passion for photography led him away from the madness that the City of God went through and gave him hope. You have to give this young man credit for the harm he put himself through just to get the photos of the mobsters. He was a generous and lovable man which really shined in the darkness. Easily the favourite of the movie. Great actor too! However I would recomm…

I've heard from people that City of God feels a lot like a foreign version of Goodfellas and so, I've been dying to check out this movie as I loved Scorsese's Goodfellas. And I'm finally glad I did…City of God really just follows the life story of two boys that grow up in the City of God. It follows the story of a young boy who wishes to be a photographer, Rocket and another violent, drug dealing murderer nicknamed Lil Ze. The film is pretty much told in the form of a biography with the story going into the past.Everything about City of God was pretty much fantastic. The characters are very interesting, amusing and keep you excited for the story. The acting in the movie is very good by young children. Douglas DeSilva as Lil Ze was absolutely fantastic in the movie giving a very bold performance. The story is told extremely neatly, easily showing proportions to Tarantino's film making technique and feels a lot like Goodfellas and even Pulp Fiction.Overall, I …

"City of God" will change your perspective. As a movie critic I recently enjoyed a Brazilian fill called City of God or Cidade de Deus in Portuguese. There is always more to a movie than just the motion picture. There are components that make a movie a work of art. City of God captures this and made it amazing to watch. This move was directed by Fernando Meirelles in 2002. It is a Brazilian crime drama film. Meirelles incorporates his touch as a movie director and created a very interesting movie that brought more to the viewer. It created in the mind a new perspective and understanding of the reality that is hidden in Brazil. The movie beginning with the story of a young boy that lives in the flavela's during the 60's. Throughout the movie we begin to see a series of character that connect with each other and all together tell a story. The main character Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) narrates the story from his point of view. We see how he is different from other ch…
